Remember the Primitive Star Burst

Finally finished the hand quilting that I wanted to add between the machine quilting.  Even removed some machine quilting that I didn't like although I see now that I need to remove one more line of stitches from a square.

It was a clear day after having several days of poor air quality due to all the fires in all the western states.

Have to say I was tickled to put a quilt in the mail for the Spring issue of the prim mag today.  Hard to think of Spring when I'm really looking forward to Winter and snow and cold temps and no fires.

Finally, Some Critters

Reindeer critters first.  I'm making a Christmas table runner with wool applique on a brushed plaid fabric background.  The little faces are based on a design from Jan Patek's Up on the Rooftop book.  She has the book for sale on her website.

A mule deer buck with antlers in their velvet stage.  His coat looks scruffy, hopefully from starting to shed his summer coat now and not some disease.

He has a friend with him.  I guess they are both looking for some green grass in all those weeds in the lower meadow.

Christmas in July

I'm so glad Debbie posted her blocks from the Christmas BOM that our Yahoo quilting group is stitching.  I've been so itching to share my blocks.

Some are making their blocks in stitchery, decided mine would be wool applique on the same wool background.  Will use the red wool sashing around each block.

The Primitive Star Burst Quilt

Despite Bailey, (he is a beautiful boy), I was able to get the Prim Star Burst machine quilted.   This is my design, Linda, all the fabric is vintage Brannock & Patek. I left lots of room between the not perfect stitching lines, I wanted random lines with no rhyme or reason, not bothering me if the lines matched up or not.  Now I can add some hand quilting between those lines.  I saw the look on a blog and really liked it.

Catching a needed breeze.

Went searching for wildlife, would have even been okay to see a rattlesnake to test my lens, but the little rabbit was all I saw. 

Primitive Stars and Horses, Finished

I finished stitching the scrappy binding on my quilt. 

It's larger than it looks, the horses are about 16 inches across, just love large applique.

The wind helped a bit to show the backing fabric, a great dark blue brushed plaid, very soft.

                               
Watching the tropical storm in the Gulf, I still have family in Texas and then the fires in the West, just makes me sick to see all the devastation from the fires.  Colorado seems to having the worst of it for now, very sad.
                                

Harriet Powers, Pictorial Quilt Block Two

I finished the second block from the Pictorial Quilt and added the sashing between my first two blocks.  The blocks are large, about 21" square.

My inspiration from the original, courtesy of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.  The words that Harriet wrote to describe the second block.

The dark day of May 19, 1780.

The seven stars were seen 12 N in the day.

The cattle wall went to bed, chickens to roost and the trumpet was blown.

The sun went off to a small spot and then to darkness.

Stars, Stars, Stars

Betsy, here is the quilt you were asking about, Stars, Stars, Stars.  I made it way back in 2004.  It was published in Jan Patek's book, Porch Swing.  Funny story, Cherie Ralston saw it first as a the top, I had not quilted it yet.  She showed it Jan.  Jan wanted it, fast for her book, so I mailed it to Cherie.  She had it quilted for me and she even sewed the binding on it for for the deadline.  What a friend.

Imperial Blooms Progress and the Bear

 I'm making progress on this block from Imperial Blooms.  Now adding the embellishment stitches.  Changed it a bit by adding the stem and the shell looking beads and the center color of the wool.

 Just when I thought he had gone to the higher elevations.  He was back, only for a few minutes so he was a good bear.  Didn't even have to yell at him.  Does he not look like he's praying.  He was so hot, he put both paws in the water pail before he left.

And I failed to mention that the Prim String quilt I posted about earlier was inspired from this vintage quilt.  Pictured here in The Ultimate Quilting Book by Maggie McCormick Gordon.

And yes, those are antlers along the stairs, many more outside, those are white from the sun.  The perfect ones are in the house, all finds from Jim when he use to hike in the woods.  He loved finding those antlers.

A Little Porch Time & more snow of course

Started my first block from Lynda Hall's A Little Porch Time, don't like to sew behind the machine, and definitely don't like sewing triangles, so wool was the answer for this block. I made the backing block a little bigger until I hand sew all the wool triangles and then will size the block. Am using a cross stitch with wool thread to pull the triangles together. I think I will like this since i intend to use wool for most of the applique. It's a great prim quilt.

See those beautiful clear blue skies behind the snow covered trees, it means cold, cold temps.

Running as fast as I can

Just when I think I can't take another step with taking care of Jim, work, home chores, I find this wonderful package waiting for me at the post office, tears are obscuring me from typing I'm so over whelmed with winnng Tak's give away, beautiful wools, a little pouch with a dollie inside and a Japanese china doll and stamp. Thank you Tak for your thoughtfulness.
