The Emily Munroe Quilt

The Emily Munroe Quilt, also called a 'Civil War' quilt that was stitched by Emily Munroe in 1865.
A combination of wool, embroidery and applique with details of twisted yarn for couching.  Such a spectacular quilt that is so primitive and folk art in it's design and construction.  So...I've been working on reproducing it since this past winter.

The first block pattern from Hoopla Patterns, adaptation of the design is by Frances Quinn.  The quilt measures approximately 59" x 68" and consists of 54,  8 1/2 blocks so the applique pieces are tiny.  I'm using all wool for the blocks and applique.  I purchased the pattern from a local wool shop.

My first block on an army green wool background with couching of white wool yarn for the stems.  There is also couching of red and white wool yarn around the flowers.  I have more blocks completed and will show them in the coming week.

  1. I love that quilt and was thinking of reproducing some of it myself, is that allowed? I saw the pattern and that is pricey.

    1. I think if a designer has spent 2 years adapting the quilt into pattern form and has a copyright on it, reproducing it without buying the pattern is not acceptable. The price reflects the designer's work and I respect that. If you see the original quilt and are inspired to draw out your own block that is fine.

  10. It's a beautiful quilt for sure! One of my friends remade the quilt from a photo in a book. She won a ribbon in a recent show. You can see it on my blog if you wish to see another version. It's a fairly recent post. Have fun making it!
