I am in awe when I see such a majestic bird as the Trumpeter Swan.
A pair are nesting on a pond not far from the house, that's their artificial nest in the background.
Trumpeter Swans are the largest waterfowl bird in North America.
They have a wing span of eight feet.
In a standing position, they are approximately four feet high and weigh up to thirty pounds.
They have been known to live 29 years in the wild. Can you imagine?
They can fly between 40-80 miles per hour.
They usually mate for life.
I'm hoping to go back and get pics of the pair together. The mate was too far back in the pond for me to get a good picture.
And maybe I can get pics of the little ones when they hatch.

We don't have too many trumpeters now, the mute swans have come in and taking their territory. Love swans, they are so beautiful.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful, elegant bird. We have several swan families over here, all with little ones now, they are sooooo cute. The mums & dads are really protective though, don't come to close or you will find out how big such a bird really is! They will come after you!

ReplyDeleteOh My Gosh!! What FANTASTIC pictures!! I didn't know a darn thing about Trumpeter Swans and I can't believe their wing span or how fast they fly or how long they live. They are sooo beautiful too! I think you are so very blessed to be able to see these wonderful birds in person - very, very cool!!! I hope you are able to see and get pictures of any babies they may have and share them with us. But if not, I THANK YOU for sharing these as well as telling a little about them - such exquisite, beautiful, beautiful birds!!!

I did not know they lived so long.

ReplyDeleteI've never "met" a trumpeter swan in person so don't really know much about them. Your post was really informative with all the facts you included. Your photos are lovely but it's hard to tell their size so I was surprised to read how large they are. Eight feet is a HUGE wing span. It will be fun to see photos of their nest, eggs, hatchlings -- whatever photos you share of the wildlife in your area are always wonderful.
