The Big Stitch

Have read some talk and even a new book on the Big Stitch. I love it, especially working by hand on prim quilts, easier, faster and the look of hand did prim. I made this quilt back in 2007, A Penny Saved, you all have probably already seen it once, but I did use the big stitch to hand quilt it, barely shows on the closeup since I used a black crochet cotton thread. I now prefer the perle cottons for wool and linen or crochet cotton for cotton prim items. I want you to know I hand appliqued all those circles. The quilt is all Moda cotton fabrics.

  1. I like using floss for hand stitching, shows up nice and a durable thread. Love that piece, you did a beautiful job on it.

  2. You know I made this quilt from your pattern! In pinks and browns. Mine is on the back of our sofa. I did not hand applique mine. I did it on the machine. I also machine quilted it. I LOVE IT! You did a fantastic job working this pattern up!

  4. I don't remember this quilt (and I've watched your slide show several times) so it was a treat to see all the circles. You're so proliferate ~ just wondering where you hang all those quilts! Love this one.

  5. I too love the big stitch quilting, I'm quilting a Japanese quilt at the moment in dark chocolate brown big stitch, perle thread of course. I just love how quick and forgiving it is, rustic and prim too..

It looks as if you used cotton instead of wool! Very impressive. I've always wanted to make something similar out of wool, but never considered using cotton. What you did was a lot more work. Good job!!

  9. For a good while, I wanted to make a quilt like this. Other projects got my attention and I never did. Yours is good!

  10. I love that quilt! Mine is still a work in progress. Pennies are all cut and appliqued to one another - now to applique them to the background. So many handwork projects . . . so little time *S*
