A Wool Table Rug

I finished 'Ned and Jake'.  A large wool table rug that was designed by Cee Rafuse of Early Style Penny Rugs on Etsy.  The rug is large, 36" long.  Cee's kit included the design, wools and aged string.  She even cuts out the applique shapes for you. I bought several packages of her aged string for some of my own primitive projects since I've come to love the look of this stitching.  She has sold out of all of these kits.

I used an aged muslin for the backing and the binding.

A close-up of the primitive feather stitching.

I'm a traditional quilter and I applique much the same way, I use applique pins, fabric glue or baste to hold my pieces in place.  I don't fuse, it seems to distort the look and feel of the wool to me.

  3. Wow looks wonderful. I am currently doing a wool/cotton BOM which was my first adventure with wool. The directions were to fuse the wool applique pieces which I now wish I had not done. After I started this BOM, I took a class from Norma Whaley and really fell in love with wool. She does not use fusible and the affect is so spectacular. i think fusing makes the wool look like inexpensive felt.

  4. Beautiful. I am a traditional appliquer as well, never fuse. Must say not much wool applique going on in my country, so apart from a Lisa Bongean pin cushion I never used wool only cotton. I love the look of your horses in this project. And the stitching, just lovely.

  5. Oh how sweet. It takes me back to my childhood. There was a man in our neighborhood (12 miles of woods roads) who used a beautiful team of Belgians (named Pat and Jake!) to haul logs. Mr. Filer was about 5' tall and all he had to do was whisper to those two and they would do whatever he asked. He instilled in me a love for horses that will last forever. Beautiful work! I don't fuse wool either.
