Susan McCord

I have been looking at this quilt by Susan McCord since I bought the book, Our Favorite Quiltmakers, Susan McCord, by Barbara Brackman, Shauna Christensen and Deb Rowden a year or so ago. I go online and look at it, it's on display at the Henry Ford Museum. This picture is curtesy of the Henry Ford Museum. I am being drawn to make this quilt, not a small version, or one inspired by, this quilt, it's on my mind so, I think that I must make it.
It was made in 1850, every piece is appliqued, the leaves are pieced of many different fabrics and then appliqued, to think she did this in 1850. The quilt is large, 85 x 72, all cotton, but she didn't use any batting.
It's a masterpiece of what can be created with your heart and soul.

  1. Oh, Nancy! How absolutely mind-blowing this quilt is. I can understand exactly why you are so drawn to it and have such a need to create one. I wish I had the talent as I feel equally drawn. I look forward to seeing this idea progress on your blog. Perhaps I could be inspired to reach beyond my current abilities!

  4. This masterpiece is in my mind too since I bought the Henry Ford book! Are you going to make it? It's so beautiful and she used the tiniest pieces! I have so much tiny pieces I think I can make a vine with leaves from here to your house with them :-)

  5. It is lovely, I have seen it too in that book. I am amazed that she did this with NO light! Candle light at best, or a lantern? Wow, we are blessed!!
