Ode to Harriet Powers

I finished the first block of Harriet Powers' Pictorial Quilt.  I "cheated", I just couldn't make progress on those last four stars and the points, so I fused them.  I'm a traditional applique person, needle turn, always, but after seeing the stars and stitching a tiny whip stitch to the edges, may have to change my views about fusing.

Anyway, while on Pinterest, my visual quilt book, found a link
to a quilter that I had never heard of, Peggie Hartwell.  She has stitched a wonderful quilt called Ode to Harriet Powers.  Here's the link,

And another link, a blog, sad to say it no longer exists since the posts are from 2010.  A post regarding Harriet Powers and "Identity".  As in, "when you express yourself or create art, do you think the end result says something about your identity?"  So do you make quilts to express your identity?
Raining this morning, a view from the window, snow on the mountain top across the hill and clouds below.

  1. I like your first block! Now, did you design the pattern from the picture? I'm also interested to see that your preferred method of applique is the needle turn! BTW, I just received the first two blocks of the 2012 Mystery Block of the Month from Jan Patek's website. Love the fabric, love the design! I'm off to start on Block 5 of "By Wisdom a House is Built". It's all over my kitchen counter. :)

  3. Whatever gets the job done is the way to go. I think I would do the same thing to get those points made. You know I love your block.

  5. I used to hand applique; I still like it, but fusing opens up a whole world of projects I might actually complete one day. *sigh* Thanks for the links. It is fun to explore. Karmen

  6. I've resorted to fusing a time or two. When the points are just too tiny. I know it can be done...... but...... I'm not talented or skilled enough and I'd rather it look good than a frayed mess.

    Yours turned out wonderful!
