The Marriage Pen Wiper Rug

I fell in love with this wool rug the minute I saw it on Cee Rafuse's blog.
The Marriage Pen Wiper Rug is made with aged dark wools and aged string for the embroidery and blanket stitches.

The rug tells a story of a marriage of a couple and their family.  The initials of loved ones are stitched with important dates such as their birth, a marriage or a death...much like a family tree.

I'm making it for a friend.
I have lot of research to do on their family history
and one hundred tongues to blanket stitch just to get started.

The above photos are courtesy of  Cee Refuse.

The kit from Cee Rafuse of Early Style Penny Rugs came with all the tongues cut in those wonderful aged wools and the aged string.  She even included one tongue stitched so you could see the size that your blanket stitch needed to be.  Of course she has her YouTube videos for instructions. I have a chocolate prairie cloth from LJFibers that I'm going to use for the backing.

  1. I didn't realize it had dates on it, that is a wonderful idea of pennies. I know I have a similar one in one of my books, but not with dates and things, will have to look at it again. That is a lot of tongues to stitch;)

  2. I think the blanket stitch will go faster than stitching the names and dates. What a wonderful gift for a friends--lucky her.

  9. I love penny rugs and I have seen many that I would like to make, but I have never seen one with the family history on it. Very unique and so very special. How wonderful of you to make it for them.
